Crypto
I wrote Crypto as a simple means of working CryptoQuote puzzles, which can be found in many daily newspapers. Crypto does not solve the puzzle for you. When you carefully enter a puzzle in the form at right, Crypto will create the puzzle for you. I recommend that you type the puzzle into a text editor such as NotePad, then copy and paste it into Crypto. I have a file called 'Crypto.Txt' in which I keep quite a few CryptoQuote puzzles. The Crypto puzzle will be spaced so that words do not break. There will be an empty box under each letter of the puzzle. When you click in a box, the box color will change slightly and you may enter your letter there. Crypto will automatically change every corresponding letter in the puzzle to the last letter you entered. 
In other words, if you wish to replace the letter 'X' with the letter 'O' , just click the box under any 'X' and type the letter 'O' . Crypto will then check the puzzle and replace any other 'X's' with 'O's' . If you make a mistake, simply click the 'O' , or any other letter that you wish to change, and enter the correct letter. You may Right-Click a letter to delete it. There is a Menu Option called Clear that will remove any and all letters that you have entered, essentially restarting the puzzle. The alphabet is displayed at the top of the page next to the Menu. Each letter you use is replaced by a period. Crypto will not let you use a letter that has already been used. If you change or delete a letter, Crypto will put the changed or deleted letter back into the alphabet. 
There are 2 more pages that are available through the Menu. 2 Letter Words and Letter Frequency. They are shown on the Right. What else? Well, Crypto will let you make your own puzzles. Simply reverse the process. In other words, instead of entering a CryptoQuote puzzle, enter any phrase, joke, poem or whatever you choose. Then just go through randomly, left to right, or whatever method you like and enter letters, one at a time. When every box is filled, you will have your own CryptoQuote puzzle and Crypto will ensure that you do not use a letter twice. To save your CryptoQuote puzzle, click Menu, then click Copy. That will open a new Menu with 3 options. Each Copy option will copy your puzzle to the clipboard and optionally save it for you as a Text file. You may Copy the Puzzle, the Solution or Both. 
I removed the Letter Count Form and placed that information on the Crypto Puzzle Form. I also did a little tweaking of the Form colors for what I think is an improved overall look. If you compare the example of the NEW format on the right with the OLD format above, I think you will agree that this one is much more efficient at using the available screen area. You may close any of the Windows that you don't want to see. When you do so, the other Windows will automatically re-align themselves to utilize the most screen area. If you close the Main form "Crypto", it will end the program and close all other attached Windows. |
